Vicetone Feat Barack Obama – Hope
Ok what the hell is this? Feat Barack Obama ‘Hope’ is like a kick in the nuts*. You fucking hate it at the time, but later you can’t stop telling people how you were kicked in the balls, and although it hurt it was fucking epic!
Yes this track is ‘capital E’ Epic. Some tracks in the past have captured the same presidential or ‘expert orator’ vibe. Check out the JFK mix of ‘The Man With The Red Face’ or Octave One – ‘Black Water’ Martin Luther King mix (at the bottom). The Vicetone double act form North America have got this down, they released ‘Hope’ last year and now available as a free download on their Facebook page. Much like Obama himself this track kicks of with a very promising address indeed. Hope was the slogan used in the electoral race first time around and as you listen you begin to hope the drop, which is accentuated by the wonderful construction of the breakdown and build up with Obama on voice complimented with great plucky synth action will be just as good.

Well is it?
- Famous ‘feat’ artists, CHECK!.
- Break with a tantalising build up to the drop and expert use of Obama voice, CHECK!
- Crowd and echo effect used to maximum potential, CHECK!
- Cheeky little ‘record stopping’ effect before drop. CHECK!
- Bass line explosion pulling out all the stops sending crowd into frantic judder dance…………..CHEEE……almost, 85%.
A pass. Better than a good effort but just a little short of genius. I can’t help comparing this tack to Avicii’s ‘Levels’ but with the main piano part missing. It’s as if the final ingredient to take this over the top in one piece has been completely forgotten, left in the trenches on the side table. Like Obama’s first term so much anticipation but not quite delivering on all promises – The breakdown could be health care reform and the rest is Guantanamo – “Hasn’t got round to it”.

Is this a bad track? Not at all, it’s massive, its been in my mind since I found it as a free download on Soundcloud last week. Like the page and the three part mix package is yours. What’s not to like? The breakdown will inject some life into the most unhealthy of DJ sets. It’s grand, it’s dramatic it catches your ear. I would even bet you could play this at a wedding or uncle Tony’s fifty-ith, in between Chic – Le Freak and Kool and the Gang – Jungle Boogie, drop the radio edit and Bob’s your uncle, or in this case… Tony.
1 2 and 3 mixes…..Radio edit – Main mix and Instrumental. The instrumental holds it own a little better, and this could be the problem by adding the world wild recognised voice of Barack and the ‘Hope’ speech you expect more musical stratification on top to balance out the euphoric articulation.
