A Space Odyssey – 2014

Werner Von Braun, is widely recognised as the father of modern rocketry, and the driving force behind early NASA missions.  His rockets literally propelled the US into ‘The Space Race’ first position.  An interesting man who’s life could have come from the pages of a Hollywood Film, and one day probably will.  A Nazi? Yes.  Well at least on the surface. In the Second World War his rockets fell on London.  Commonly known as ‘Doodlebugs’ or ‘V2’s’ these weapons of death destroyed many parts of London towards the end of the Second World War.  Fortunately for Great Britain and the Allies the German War Machine was desperate and lumbering by the time Hitler’s so called “wonder weapons” began to take effect.  At the end of the war, as the Allies rolled into Berlin, a race began, a pre-cursor to the for mentioned ‘Space Race’, and one that would ultimately perpetuate it.  The Race? Between the Russians and the US, for the acquirement of technology, and the minds who helped to develop it.  The fleeing Nazi scientists we’re rounded up in their droves.  In the US this secret undertaking was known as ‘Project Paper Clip’ and the prominent figure of ‘Von Braun’ was relocated along with many of his cohorts to the West Coast of America soon after the end of the war.  Here he was given cart blanche to further develop his rockets and the result of which were used to send American astronauts into space for years to come.
